The method
Not a method for producing chess players. A method for producing children who stop for a second before they decide. Chess is the material, the thinking is the point.
A rule is shown on a single arranged position. Not ten examples, not a page of variations. One board a child can picture later, on the bus, without the book in front of them.
Adults learn from repetition across cases. Small children learn from one clear image and then recognise it everywhere. The whole series is built on that difference.
Say it, show it, let the child try. Then stop. The loop is deliberately shorter than an adult would find satisfying, because a six year old's attention is shorter than an adult's patience.
Most chess teaching for young children fails here. It is not wrong, it is simply too long. We work with the attention span instead of fighting it.
Ask the question. Count silently to five. Only then answer.
Those five seconds are uncomfortable for the adult and they are where the entire method lives. In them the child stops waiting to be told and starts working it out. A child who is always told stays a child who waits.
In a classroom the coach does two jobs at once: they teach the position, and they manage the moment. When to press, when to go quiet, when to end the session while the child still wants more.
At home the parent is left with only the first job, and usually without knowing chess. So the second job goes missing and the board ends up in a cupboard.
The green box on every topic is that second job, written down. The question to ask. The sentence that kills a child's interest, so you can avoid it. How to finish so tomorrow is easy.
